Victoria Ramos scored on Melissa Mayhew’s grounder to second in the bottom of the seventh inning to give St. Joseph’s College a 5-4 victory over Dominican in its softball season opener Sunday at Fort Myers, Florida.
The Monks had an easier time in their second game of the day, scoring eight times in the first inning en route to a six-inning 13-4 victory over Wisconsin Lutheran in Cape Coral, Florida.
In the first game, St. Joseph’s loaded the bases with one out in the seventh on singles by Ramos, Kim Jordan and Kelsy Gaddy. Mayhew then slapped a ground ball to second, and Ramos beat the throw home.
BASEBALL
FONTBONNE 8, ST. JOSEPH’S 7: The Monks (2-6) rallied from an early 4-0 deficit but then gave up the tying and winning runs in the eighth inning as they lost to Fontbonne (1-2) in Winter Haven, Florida.
St. Joseph’s scored five runs in the third inning, highlighted by Taylor Reuillard’s two-run homer. Mike Kinch’s RBI single later in the inning gave the Monks a 5-4 lead.
St. Joseph’s made it 7-4 in the sixth on Brett Barbati’s sacrifice fly and Jameson Collins’ RBI double.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
COLBY 16, HUSSON 0: Kendall Smith, Sara Miller and Sasha Fritts scored three goals apiece as the Mules (2-1) routed the Eagles (0-2) in Waterville.
Colby, ranked No. 5 in NCAA Division III, raced to a 12-0 halftime lead. Miller, a senior midfielder, struck three times in the opening 14 minutes, with Cassie Rodgers assisting on all three goals.
STEVENS 11, BATES 8: Emma Brinkman scored three goals and Moriah Greenstein finished with a goal and three assists for Bates (3-2) in a loss to the Ducks (1-1) at Hoboken, New Jersey.
