Wil Smith Memorial Sunday

Catherine McAuley High School is holding a memorial service for former girls’ basketball coach Wil Smith, who lost his battle with cancer last month, Sunday at 1 p.m. McAuley has also started a memorial scholarship fund in Smith’s name to honor his life and work by providing a top-notch education to women in our community. SMCC hoops teams fall at nationals

The Southern Maine Community College men’s and women’s basketball teams traveled to the U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association Division II national championship in Newport News, Virginia last week full of hope, but both squads were ousted in the quarterfinals. The men, ranked first, were upset by No. 9 Penn State-Mont Alto. 71-67, despite 15 points from Tyheem Simon. The Seawolves couldn’t quite rally from a 14-point second half deficit. After losing to Penn State-York in the consolation round (despite 18 points from Simon), SMCC finished the season 23-5. SMCC’s women, ranked sixth, were ousted by No. 3 Penn State-Lehigh Valley, 74-67. Jaimi Poland led the way with 15 points and 13 rebounds. In the consolation round, the Seawolves beat Berkeley (N.Y.) by a 62-57 score. Amira Jones had 19 points and 13 rebounds as SMCC finished 21-9.

Lacrosse officiating classes offered

The Maine Women’s Lacrosse Officials’ Association is offering new umpire classes for adults. Classes will be held at Thornton Academy and Brunswick High School on Monday nights through March 23 from 6 to 8 p.m. and at Falmouth High School on Thursday nights through March 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. New officials must attend a minimum of three classes to qualify for the 2015 season.
