Police are investigating the assault of a 16-year-old girl by a fellow student outside Massabesic High School in Waterboro, according to the York County Sheriff’s Office.

The girl accused of beating her schoolmate also is 16 years old. No names have been released and no charges have been filed.

The incident took place at 9:30 a.m. March 6, according to Sheriff Bill King. Part of the incident was captured on a video that was provided to police, he said.

A one-minute video that has been posted on the Internet shows one girl kneeling over another girl and punching her in the head as the girl lying on her back tries to block the blows. The incident appears to take place on a dirt or paved area outside the school as other students walk by without interfering or trying to stop the beating. It is not clear what happened before or after the moments captured on the video.

The girl who was beaten has obtained a protection order that prohibits the schoolmate from contacting her or being near her except for incidental contact while they are both at school, according to the sheriff’s office.

The sheriff’s office also said officials with Regional School Unit 57 have taken appropriate action, although no disciplinary action has been made public by the district. The district’s superintendent did not respond to a request for more information about the district’s response.

A deputy who works as Massabesic’s school resource officer is working with school officials and investigating the incident, it said.
