New Hires, Promotions and Appointments
Amy Regan Gallant has been named associate state director for advocacy and outreach at AARP Maine, based in Portland. Previously, Gallant worked for social service agency Preble Street, which she joined in 2007 and most recently served as advocacy coordinator for the Maine Hunger Initiative and for Homeless Voices for Justice. Gallant was also appointed by Gov. Paul LePage as commissioner of the Maine Permanent Commission on the Status of Women.
Norman, Hanson & DeTroy, a Portland-based law firm, has hired two attorneys. Dan Riley, who has 21 years of experience practicing as legislative counsel, now heads the firm’s new Governmental Relations Practice Area. Shane Wright, an associate, specializes in commercial and real estate law.
The Bath office of J. Edward Knight Insurance has added Clay Adams to its team of agents. Adams has 24 years of insurance experience, including 14 years of work specializing in marine and energy businesses and in workers’ compensation claims. He is a 1990 graduate of the University of Southern Maine.
Giving Back
One Warrior Won, a Maine-based nonprofit group that assists veterans, in February received a donation of $5,800 from 100+ Women Who Care Southern Maine, a group of women who pool their financial resources to support local charities. The recent contribution will help One Warrior Won pair veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder with shelter dogs that are trained as service animals.
The Trauma Intervention Program of Greater Portland is honoring Maine Medical Center emergency and special-care staff, along with 24 TIP volunteers, at its 10th Annual Heroes with Heart celebration on April 1. A program of Maine Behavioral Healthcare, TIP provides volunteers to offer emotional and practical support to victims in the hours following a tragedy. The celebration is scheduled for 5:30-8:30 p.m., at Holiday Inn by the Bay, 88 Spring St., Portland.
Recognition
Two public health employees of the City of Portland were honored by the Maine Dental Association in February for their efforts to advance oral health care. Kathy Martin, coordinator of the Children’s Oral Health Program in Portland, and Vaneesa Woodward, a community health promotion specialist with the city, received the “Spotlight on Dentistry Award” at a ceremony in Augusta.
Thomas Kivler, director of behavioral health at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick, has been named one of 10 fellows in the first class of the John T. Gorman Fellowship. The fellowship, sponsored by the John T. Gorman Foundation, is a leadership program for directors and chief officers of organizations throughout the state that aim to improve the lives of at-risk youth, low-income seniors and other vulnerable people.
SFX America, of Portland, has earned a Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program Award from the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The SHARP award, held by fewer than 70 other Maine worksites, acknowledges safety achievement measures implemented by SFX, which provides outsourced mail-fulfillment services.
Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage recently honored its top-selling real estate agents at a gala attended by 100 sales associates in South Portland. Among the recipients honored were Jennifer DeSena, of Cape Elizabeth; Bryce Hamilton, of Portland; Dari Hurley, of Brunswick; Jane and Garry Smith, of Portland; and Cathy Thibeault, of Brunswick.
New Beginnings
Friday Pie Club, which offers made-to-order pies and tarts for delivery, has opened a retail pie shop at 317 Main St., Yarmouth. Owners Meghan Fennell and Charles Fischman also offer coffee and other items at the shop, which is on the first floor of the 317 Main Community Music Center.
