A man who last week accused an off-duty Westbrook police officer of assaulting him in front of his hair salon was arrested Thursday on charges of domestic violence.

Brian McMahon, 46, who police described as a transient, was arrested after police were called to Head Lines at 193 Main St. at 10:30 a.m. for a report of someone screaming. Officers checked the cellar and found a woman who they say had been a victim of domestic assault, police said.

Rescue workers evaluated the woman and she was not taken to the hospital.

In addition to domestic violence, McMahon was charged with failure to appear in court on a previous charge, violating bail conditions and obstructing the report of a crime. The latter charge was for allegedly grabbing the woman’s cellphone from her hand and throwing it, police said.

McMahon was taken to York County Jail in Alfred where he is being held without bail because of the charge of violating bail conditions from a previous arrest.

McMahon was in the news recently after a confrontation with Westbrook Detective Sgt. John Desjardins, who was off duty at the time.

McMahon said he approached Desjardins’ car thinking it was someone else and when he tried to open the door, the officer pointed a gun at him. Desjardins then got out of the car and after a heated exchange, shoved McMahon into the front window of Head Lines, McMahon told police. The window broke, though McMahon was not injured.

Desjardins said McMahon walked up to the car screaming and tried to open the passenger side door, frightening Desjardins’ wife, who was in the passenger seat. The door was locked. Desjardins said when McMahon refused to back away from the car, Desjardins pushed him away.

McMahon has notified Westbrook that he may sue Desjardins and the Westbrook Police Department.
