Basketball Player Wins Award

Maria Valente from Gray-New Gloucester High School was recently named as the Robert E. Butler Sr. Award winner for 2015 from the Western Maine Conference.

This award is based on her four years of basketball and takes into account leadership, overall good citizenship, sportsmanship, dedication to team play and outstanding quality basketball performance. One male and one female basketball player from the WMC are chosen from nominated finalists. Maria joins her brother Taylor (2010) as Gray-New Gloucester’s only recipients of this prestigious award.

Science Teacher Named District Winner

Andrea Harvey, a science teacher at Gray-New Gloucester High School in Gray, has been named a district winner in the Shell Science Lab Challenge, a competition for middle and high school science teachers. Sponsored by the Shell Oil Co. and administered by the National Science Teachers Association, the competition encouraged teachers (grades 6-12), who have found innovative ways to deliver quality lab experiences with limited school and laboratory resources, to share their approaches for a chance to win a school science lab makeover support package valued at $20,000. Harvey is one of 18 district winners named, from which five national finalists will be chosen. From the national finalists a grand prize winner will be selected.

All town of Gray budget workshops are conducted in the Council Chambers at Town Hall at 7 p.m. Workshops are open to the public, and are aired on GCTV Cable Channel 2. March 30 – Council Review of proposed budget.

Learn about the Dempsey Center

Gray Extension will meet Wednesday, April 1, at 10 a.m. at the Congregational Church Parish Hall, behind McDonalds. The program speaker will be Maureen Higgins, from the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing in Lewiston. She will speak on the many programs offered at the Dempsey Center for cancer patients and their families. The public is welcome to come to this program.

Fiddlehead Children’s Theater presents: “Shrek Jr.,” a fairy tale complete with unexpected twists and turns.

The Middle School Drama Club presents “Alice at Wonderland,” on Thursday, April 2, and Friday, April 3, at 6 p.m. at the Gray-New Gloucester Middle School, Libby Hill Road in Gray. The show will be full of fun songs, crazy characters and fancy footwork and will delight audience members of all ages.

At Gray Rec

• There is no annual Easter Egg Hunt this year.

• An Ultimate Indoor Garage Sale takes place Saturday, March 28, at the Newbegin Community Center. Free and open to public from 7 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Refreshments available.

• April Vacation Camp – Join Gray Recreation for a cool week (April 21-24) of awesome activities. The gym will be open for fun activities, contests and games each day and they’ll be going outside for some fresh air and fun (so pack your outdoor play gear – mud boots especially). Field trips are in the works but a minimum of 14 registrations are needed to provide a bus.

• In Service Day – On Friday, April 17, at the Newbegin Gym from 7 a.m.-5:30 p.m., the Kids Club staff will be on hand to encourage participation and keep the kids active and having fun. All children will have the choice of many indoor activities and, if weather permitting, outside play. Parents must come in and sign in and out their children, grades K-6 (limited to 20 children). The deadline to register is April 13.

• Junior Lacrosse Program – This program is designed to provide an introduction to the fastest growing sport in America. Children in grades K-2 will be introduced to the basic fundamentals of lacrosse from G-NG Patriot coaching staff and players. It will be held at the Newbegin Gym (outside weather permitting) on Saturdays, April 4, 11, and 25 and May 2 and 9. Kindergartners and first-graders are 9-9:45 a.m., grades 1 and 2 are 10-10:45 a.m. (First graders may choose times based on child’s athletic ability and maturity).
