Colby sweeps Lawrence in baseball doubleheader

Andrew Currier totaled five hits, five RBI and three runs scored, and Colby swept Lawrence, 6-4 and 9-8, at Winter Haven, Florida on Friday.

Currier tripled and scored on a double by Tyler Starks in the sixth as Colby scored twice to break a 3-3 tie in the opener.

Colby used a three-run seventh to take the lead in the nine-inning second game.

Henry Van Zant pitched a four-hitter and Peter Cimini drove in two runs as Bowdoin (6-9, 1-1 NESCAC) won 6-1 in the opener of a doubleheader against Tufts (10-4, 1-1) at Northborough, Massachusetts, before falling 6-0 in the second game.

SOFTBALL: Meaghan Lewia and Erica Pulford each had two hits as Colby (3-7) ended its Florida trip with an 8-2 loss to Buena Vista (10-9) and a 5-0 loss to Lawrence (8-4).

MEN’S HOCKEY: Danny O’Regan scored 7:27 into overtime to give Boston University a 3-2 victory over Yale at Manchester, New Hampshire in a Northeast Regional semifinal in the NCAA tournament.

 Willie Raskob had a goal and an assist for Minnesota-Duluth in its 4-1 win over Minnesota at Manchester.

 Freshman Judd Peterson scored at 8:11 of overtime to lift St. Cloud State to a 3-2 win over Michigan Tech in the West at Fargo, North Dakota.

 Zane McIntyre’s 29 saves helped North Dakota knock off Quinnipiac 4-1 at Fargo.

U.S. FREESTYLE CHAMPIONSHIP: Troy Murphy of Bethel earned his first U.S. title with a score of 93.95 in moguls at Steamboat Spring, Colorado, beating out Joseph Discoe (89.03).

FOOTBALL

NFL: The Vikings and cornerback Terence Newman agreed to a one-year contract worth as much as $2.5 million, including $750,000 guaranteed. The 12-year veteran has 37 career interceptions, third-most among active players.

 The Panthers claimed offensive tackle Jonathan Martin, the primary victim in the 2013 Dolphins bullying scandal, off waivers from the 49ers. Martin has started 32 of 38 games in three seasons.

TENNIS

MIAMI OPEN: American teenager CiCi Bellis beat Zarina Diyas 6-2, 6-1 and said she’s ready for a potential third-round match against Serena Williams, whose second-round match against Monica Niculescu was postponed until Saturday because of rain.

 Second-seeded Rafael Nadal, showing no ill effects from an ankle injury suffered in practice Monday, defeated fellow Spaniard Nicolas Almagro 6-4, 6-2, while two-time champion Andy Murray beat American Donald Young 6-4, 6-2.
