SALEM, Mass. — Chantal Bisson scored on a fielder’s choice with one out in the seventh inning Thursday, giving the University of Southern Maine a 2-1 victory against Salem State in the first game of a nonconference softball doubleheader.

In the second game, Amber Kelly had three hits and scored twice, and struck out four in a five-hitter for an 8-0 USM victory in six innings.

In the opener, Mary Caron and Courtney Davis finished with two hits apiece for USM (9-7) against the Vikings (10-4).

Danni Humphrey added two hits, two runs and one RBI for the Huskies in the second game, and Samantha Crosman drove in two runs and scored another.

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND SWEEPS UM-FARMINGTON: Amanda Vallante led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk and later scored on a bunt single by Abby Lambert to lift the Nor’easters (9-8) to a 5-4 win over the Beavers (1-5) in the opener at Biddeford.

The Nor’easters completed the sweep with a 6-1 victory behind a six-hitter from Katelyn Austin, who struck out eight and walked two.

In the opener, Lambert finished with three hits and Kelly Murphy added two for UNE, including a two-run double in the fifth for a 4-2 lead. The Beavers tied it in the top of the seventh on RBI singles by Shelby Bryant and Kiana Thompson.

In the second game, Austin had three hits and three RBI, including a two-run double during a four-run first.

Adrienne Chase added two hits, an RBI and a run for UNE.

BRANDEIS SWEEPS BATES: Bates (1-7) surrendered 11 runs in the final three innings against the Judges (8-9) and lost 12-2 in the second game at Lewiston.

Brandeis won the opener 8-0 in five innings.

In the second game, Bates took the lead in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Kelsey Freedman, but Brandeis answered in the second on an RBI triple by Danielle Novotny.

The Bobcats regained a 2-1 lead in the fourth on a Maddie Inlow fielder’s choice.

In the opener, Samantha Wroblewski pitched a one-hitter.

BASEBALL

ST. JOSEPH’S SWEEPS LASELL: Alex Valenti pitched a three-hitter as the Monks (8-10, 2-0 GNAC) shut out the Lasers (4-9, 0-2) 3-0 in Game 1 at Standish.

Joe Coyne went 2 for 3 with two doubles, and Taylor Black was 1 for 3 with a pair of RBI.

In the second game, Lincoln Sanborn allowed one run on six hits over six innings, striking out five in a 3-1 victory.

Brett Barbati went 2 for 3 with a pair of RBI, and Taylor Reuillard was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run for the Monks.

SALEM STATE 11, SOUTHERN MAINE 6: Kevin Carens had five hits, four runs and three RBI for the Vikings (9-5), who used a six-run sixth inning to rally past the Huskies (9-6) at Salem, Massachusetts.

Nick DiBiase hit an RBI triple and scored on a double by Sam Dexter in the first inning as the Huskies took a 3-0 lead.

DiBiase finished with three hits, two RBI and a run, and Dexter had three hits, two runs and an RBI for USM.

MEN’S LACROSSE

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 10, NICHOLS 5: Dan Auger and Remy Watt each scored twice during a 4-0 run that gave the Nor’easters (5-6, 1-2 Commonwealth Coast) the lead for good early in the fourth quarter against the Bison (4-6, 0-4) at Dudley, Massachusetts.

Auger finished with three goals and one assist for the Nor’easters, and Sam Cloutier collected two goals and two assists. UNE also got a pair of goals from Keston Beauregard.

Anthony Verville of Portland had a goal and an assist for Nichols, which led 4-2 at halftime.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 14, NICHOLS 9: Nikki Smith scored four goals as the Nor’easters (4-6, 2-1 Commonwealth Coast) pulled away from the Bison (2-6, 1-3) at Dudley, Massachusetts.

Macki Hill added three goals and Rachel Schwaner scored twice for the Nor’easters, who led 7-6 at halftime.

SOUTHERN MAINE 22, MAINE MARITIME ACADEMY 6: The Huskies (2-7) scored 10 unanswered goals to close the first half and defeated the Mariners (1-6) at Gorham.

Southern Maine opened a 14-1 halftime lead, enjoying a 28-2 advantage in shots.

Sarah Pelligrinelli led the Huskies with four goals and two assists, Nicole Laplante scored four goals and added an assist, and Anh Nguyen had three goals and a game-high four assists.

Rachel Redles scored three goals for the Mariners.
