CARRABASSETT VALLEY — A second chairlift shut down at Sugarloaf is going to remain out of service for the remainder of the season.
Resort officials announced that they were unable to get a part needed to repair the Timberline lift in time for the weekend. Sugarloaf took Timberline out of service on April 2 after a maintenance crew found the drive shaft had an abnormal level of wear and tear.
The Timberline action came less than two weeks after seven skiers were injured when the King Pine chairlift malfunctioned.
An investigation determined that the accident was caused by a broken drive shaft and a design flaw that failed to stop the lift from moving in reverse. King Pine and Timberline share a similar design.
