Scarborough firefighters put out a smoldering fire on a railway bed off Chamberlain Road on Monday afternoon, briefly delaying a train’s passage as they sought to make sure the fire was out.

Firefighters were first called the tracks around 1:10 p.m. for a suspected train fire, but they quickly determined that the fire was smoldering in the dried leaves along the tracks not the train itself, firefighters at the scene said.

Firefighters and crew members from Pan Am Railways inspected the tracks after the train backed up. Firefighters remained on the tracks dousing hot spots with hand-held extinguishers until about 2 p.m., just as rain began to fall.
