GORHAM — Paul McDonough went 4 for 5 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored to pace the offense as University of Southern Maine defeated Colby 7-5 in a non-conference baseball game.

Southern Maine (20-9) scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to break open a 4-4 game, keyed by McDonough’s two-run double to left.

Tim Corey and Andy Currier each were 2 for 4 for Colby (15-9), with Corey scoring a pair of runs.

Shyler Scates picked up the win for the Huskies with 11/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing one hit and striking out one.

BATES SWEEPS GORDON: After surrendering an unearned run in the bottom of the first, the Bobcats (11-12) scored eight unanswered runs to defeat the Fighting Scots 8-1 in the first game at Wenham, Massachusetts.

Bates won the second game 7-3, as Conor Reenstierna went 2 for 2 with two RBI.

NORTHERN ESSEX CC 7, SOUTHERN MAINE CC 5: A rally by the Seawolves (15-8) came up short in a non-conference loss to Knights (18-2) at South Portland.

Sean Adams was 2 for 3 for SMCC, while Alex Brown was 2 for 5 with a double and two RBI.

MEN’S LACROSSE

BATES 22, COLBY 10: Jack Strain led a dominant effort with six goals and an assist as the Bobcats (9-4, 6-4 NESCAC) rolled past the Mules (8-6, 4-6) at Lewiston.

Charlie Fay had four goals and an assist for the Bobcats while Derek Youngman led Colby with three goals and an assist.

TUFTS 15, BOWDOIN 9: Peter Gill and Zach Richman combined for 10 goals and an assist as the Jumbos (13-2, 8-2 NESCAC) handled the Polar Bears (3-12, 2-8) at Brunswick.

David Nemirov led Bowdoin with three goals and an assist.

SOFTBALL

BATES SPLITS WITH HUSSON: Brenna Callahan pitched 51/3 shutout innings as the Bobcats defeated the Eagles 4-0 in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader at Lewiston.

Kayla Merrill picked the complete game win for the Eagles in the first game as they defeated Bates 1-0.

BOWDOIN SWEEPS ST. JOSEPH’S: The Polar Bears (23-11) won the opener 2-1 and the second game 8-0 in five innings.

In the opener, Lauren O’Shea hit a two-run homer in the second inning and Julia Geaumont scattered eight hits for the win.

USM SWEEPS UMASS- BOSTON: The Huskies (20-14) scored five runs in the eighth inning for 5-0 win in the opener, and Amber Kelly pitched a four-hitter in a 4-1 win in the second game at Boston.

In the first game, Kirsten Duross hit a two-run single, while Taylor Lux and Amber Kelly each added run-scoring singles.

SOUTHERN MAINE CC 23, NORTHERN ESSEX CC 4: Abigail Nielsen was 5 for 5 with five RBI and four runs scored, and the Seawolves (11-7) scored 10 runs in the first inning of a win at South Portland.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

GORDON 15, UNE 14: Jessica Castelline scored the game-winning goal with 47 seconds left as the Fighting Scots (10-7, 5-3 Commonwealth Coast Conference) edged the Nor’easters (7-9, 4-4) at Wenham, Massachusetts.

Gina Newsome was the leading scorer for UNE with three goals and an assist, while Jessica Deedon and Hannah Warren each scored three goals.

BATES 9, COLBY 8: Moriah Greenstein had four goals and an assist as the Bobcats (7-8, 3-7 NESCAC) upset the 10th ranked Mules (10-5, 5-5) at Waterville.

Emma Getsinger scored the game-winner with 1:34 remaining in regulation.

ST. JOSEPH’S 21, RIVIER 5: Kat Gadbois had eight goals and two assists as the Monks (15-1) beat the Raiders (4-13) in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference quarterfinal at Bath.

Elyse Caiazzo had three goals and an assist for St. Joseph’s, while Lizzie Calnan and Kelsey Dumond each added three goals.
