The owner of a car repair shop in Waldoboro was missing after a fire destroyed his business Friday morning and a body was recovered from the basement, the State Fire Marshal’s Office said.

The body of the man recovered at Pinkham’s Auto Repair on Route 1 was burned beyond recognition, investigators said. It was taken Friday to the state medical examiner’s office in Augusta. Fire marshals said the autopsy and identification may not be completed until next week.

Owner Jeff Pinkham’s truck was parked in one of the bays of the business, investigators said. They also said that it appears the fire started in the basement.

The fire broke out at 5 a.m.
