Four adults were displaced from an apartment building in Portland’s West End on Tuesday after a fire started in the basement and spread to the top floor.

One tenant from the three apartments at 106 Clark St. was at home when the fire broke out and reported the fire around 6:30 p.m., said Portland Fire Chief Jerome LaMoria at the scene.

“The fire was contained inside a wall and had traveled from the basement level all the way to the attic space,” LaMoria said.

Firefighters rescued one cat while they put out the fire, and no one was harmed, the chief said.

LaMoria said he did not know what caused the fire or the extent of the damage.

Firefighters remained on the scene as the sun set. The Red Cross was helping the displaced tenants.
