The body of a man that was found Tuesday along the shore of the Fore River in South Portland has been identified as James Gudinas, 47, a transient from another state.

Gudinas’s body had been sent to the state Medical Examiner’s Office in Augusta early Wednesday.

Although a cause of death has not been determined, South Portland police do not believe Gudinas was the victim of foul play.

The body was discovered by a passerby at the shore at the end of Buttonwood Road, in an area just north of the Casco Bay Bridge.

Witnesses said the man was dressed in gray and white skate sneakers, cargo pants and possibly a sweatshirt and jacket.

Chris Hoy, who lives in the area, said it appeared that the body washed up on shore, because the clothing was soaked and had seaweed on it.

Detectives are still investigating and are attempting to establish a timeline leading up to his death, although they believe he had been staying recently in both the Greater Portland and Bangor areas.
