A middle-age man who was involved in a police chase in the York County town of Acton died Wednesday afternoon from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

York County Sheriff William King Jr. said a deputy saw a vehicle with one occupant pass his cruiser around 3:30 p.m., with an apparent equipment violation. When the deputy activated his lights and siren, the vehicle sped away.

After a short pursuit, the vehicle stopped near the 1400 block of West Shore Road in Acton. As the deputy approached the vehicle, the driver, who King said was in his 60s, shot himself.

A team of paramedics from the Acton Rescue Department pronounced the man dead at the scene. King said he does not plan to identify the man.

“This was an older man who was distraught. It’s very unfortunate,” King said.
