GORHAM — Sam Dexter drove in three runs and scored two as the University of Southern Maine baseball team defeated Bates 8-4 Wednesday in a nonconference game.

Dexter hit a two-run homer in the third inning and scored another on a groundout in the seventh. He also scored on a groundout in the fifth.

Nick DiBiase tripled, singled and scored two runs for the Huskies (24-10).

John Dinucci, Nate Pajka and Jake Shapiro each had two hits for Bates (12-17).

UMASS-BOSTON 11, ST. JOSEPH’S 4: The Beacons (19-13) broke it open with a six-run eighth inning and went on to beat the Monks (24-15) at Brockton, Massachusetts.

Lincoln Sanborn had two hits, including an RBI double for the Monks. Losing pitcher Alex Valenti (3-3) allowed two earned runs and stuck out six in seven innings.

SOFTBALL

MAINE, MARYLAND-BALTIMORE COUNTY SPLIT: Alexis Bogdanovich struck out 10 in a 2-1 loss in the opener, and the Black Bears (20-18, 9-5 America East) scored three runs in the seventh inning to win the second game 3-2 in a neutral-site doubleheader at Stony Brook, New York.

Rachel Carlson began the rally in the second game by reaching on an error and advancing to second on the play before moving to third on a groundout by Jessica Burk. Carlson score on single by Felicia Lennon and Bouchard followed with her fifth homer.

Danielle O’Neill hit a two-run double in the sixth inning of the opener for the Retrievers (22-24, 8-6).
