State police say the driver of an SUV that rolled over on Interstate 295 near Freeport on Friday ran off after the crash.

Trooper Marvin Hinkley said the rollover occurred shortly after 5 p.m. when the SUV, which was southbound, hit the center guardrail, flipped over and then came to rest in the passing lane on the northbound side of the highway.

Hinkley said police got descriptions of the driver and Freeport police brought in a tracking dog. Hinckley said the vehicle is registered to a Bath resident. The investigation was continuing Friday night, he said.

The northbound passing lane was closed for about an hour after the crash, Hinckley said, and traffic was backed up during the rush hour.
