NEW YORK – A man accused of shooting a New York City police officer in the head has been arraigned on charges including two counts of attempted murder of a police officer.
Demetrius Blackwell appeared in court Sunday in a torn jumpsuit with his hands cuffed behind his back and his legs shackled. He did not enter a plea and is due back in court May 8.
Blackwell was arrested Saturday night in the shooting of Officer Brian Moore. Moore remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition.
Officials say Moore was shot on a Queens street after he and his partner pulled up to a man adjusting his waistband in a suspicious manner.
Prosecutors say Blackwell was ordered to stop but turned suddenly and fired at least twice.
The 35-year-old Blackwell is being held without bail.
