NORRIDGEWOCK — A Skowhegan man was killed Sunday in a single-car accident on U.S. Route 201A in Norridgewock, police said.

Frederick Winchester, 50, died instantly when the Chrysler Sebring he was driving south at a high rate of speed failed to stop at the Ward Hill Road intersection, struck an embankment and turned end over end twice, according to a news release from the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office.

Winchester, the car’s lone occupant, was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the car, police said.

Somerset Deputy David Cole is investigating the accident. Police said speed and alcohol are being considered as possible contributing factors.

The Norridgewock Fire Department assisted with emergency response at the accident scene. Maine State Police responded as well, to assist in reconstruction of the accident details; but the determination was made that the crash could not be reconstructed, police said.

No other details about the accident were immediately available.
