GORHAM — Tyler Leavitt pitched seven strong innings, Sam Dexter went 2 for 4 with a triple and two runs scored, and the University of Southern Maine eliminated Rhode Island College with a 6-2 victory in the Little East Conference baseball tournament on Thursday afternoon.

The top-seeded Huskies (29-12) scored three runs in the first inning. Matt Bender singled to drive in Dexter, Jake Welch hit a sacrifice fly to score Paul McDonough and Bender scored on Devin Warren’s double to left center.

Southern Maine tacked on two more in the fourth inning when Dexter drove a triple to right center to bring in Nick DiBiase and then scored on a McDonough flyout to left.

Southern Maine added an insurance run in the eighth.

Leavitt earned his fifth win, allowing one earned run on eight hits, striking out six and walking one. Andrew Richards held the third-seeded Anchormen (21-13) without a hit in two innings for his ninth save.

The Huskies next face UMass-Dartmouth at 9:30 a.m. Friday.

M.I.T. 8, ST. JOSEPH’S 1: Hayden Cornwell went 3 for 4 with a homer and four RBI as the Engineers (25-12) rolled past the Monks (26-17) in a regular-season finale at Standish.

Chad Uyehara added three hits and two RBI for M.I.T, which built a 6-1 lead in the first three innings.

Taylor Reuillard and Brett Barbati each had a pair of singles for St. Joseph’s.

SOFTBALL

STONY BROOK 2, MAINE 0: Allison Cukrov struck out eight in a seven-hitter and the top seeded Seawolves (29-14) scored twice in the sixth inning to edge the fourth-seeded Black Bears (21-21) in the opening game of the America East Conference softball tournament at Stony Brook, New York.

Shayla Giosis lined a two-out single to right off Maine’s Alexis Bogdanovich to drive in Alexandra Pisciotta, and Giosis later scored on an infield error. Bogdanovich allowed three hits in six innings.

Maine will face Albany in an elimination game at 1:30 p.m. Friday.
