I am writing to share my wholehearted support for the rezoning that will allow for the redevelopment of the Portland Company on Portland’s eastern waterfront. For the City Council, this is an important decision that should be based on fact, not speculation or the fear of change.

Portland is poised to launch an exciting phase of economic growth. How our elected officials handle landmark projects like this one will have consequences to the city’s reputation and opportunities for the future.

Investment and talent that could come to Portland are watching what’s happening at the Portland Company, as they have watched other large-scale development opportunities. For the sake of the jobs and revenues they bring, it’s important we get this right.

The city has great partners in the Portland Company development team, and their vision is meticulously in keeping with the community vision expressed in the city’s comprehensive plan.

In February, after six months of work hearing from all interested parties, the Planning Board unanimously recommended the rezoning to the City Council.

Deviating from this thoughtful recommendation would send a troubling message to anyone considering investment in Portland. They will see a risk of their hard work falling prey to politics, a certain deterrent to future growth.

Approving the rezoning will benefit the entire city. It will result in things like greater public access to the property, the Eastern Prom Trail and the waterfront. It will result in preservation of important historic structures, a major increase in housing, $1.5 million in annual property tax revenues to the city (after full build-out) and creation of hundreds of jobs.

I care deeply about this city where I have lived for most of my life. I care about economic growth, affordable housing and job creation. This proposal gives us a tremendous boost in these areas.
