RUMFORD — Officials say the 40 guests are safe after a massive fire at Rumford motel.

Nearly 100 firefighters and emergency rescue workers helped to fight the fire, which started near the second-floor roof in back of the main building.

Fire Chief Bob Chase says some of the people staying at the motel were treated for smoke inhalation.

Most of the guests are contractors at the Catalyst paper mill, which is shut down for repair and maintenance.

The 50-room motel was built in 1954 and expanded in the 1960’s. Chase estimates the damage is well over $100,000.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
