Long before it was a retail mecca, Freeport was a center of shoe-manufacturing, home to more than 30 cobbling companies such as Freeport Shoe Co., A.W. Shaw and of course, L.L. Bean Inc. The Freeport Historical Society captures that storied past in “Cobblers to Capitalists: Two Centuries of Freeport Shoemaking,” an exhibit of images, shoes, tools and memorabilia, including unsold variations of the “Bean boot” and this 1970s photograph of moccasin-making at Casco Bay Trading Post. The exhibit opened last week and is on display until January at the society’s Harrington House, 45 Main St., Freeport.
