A senior rugby player at the University of Maine at Farmington has been indicted by a Franklin County grand jury on a charge of gross sexual assault.

Frank Makuch, 23, of Storrs, Connecticut, and a current resident of Farmington, knew the woman whom he allegedly assaulted, said Detective Marc Bowering of the Farmington Police Department. The woman is described only as being over the age of 18 and having made the report to police.

The crime is a Class A felony punishable by up to 30 years in prison and a fine of up to $50,000.

Makuch was arrested on the charge last month. Shortly afterward, Walter Hanstein, the rugby team coach who also said he would represent Makuch in court, withdrew as Makuch’s lawyer.

The University of Maine Farmington Rugby Football Club is a New England Rugby Football Union Division III club team.
