More than 50 cats and dogs that were bound for an animal shelter in Lewiston were rescued Thursday after the animal transport vehicle they were riding in tipped over in a northbound lane of Interstate 95 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
Portsmouth police said in a press release on their Facebook page that several police officers and the city’s animal control officer got the animals out of the wreckage. The driver was not seriously injured, but the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
“The animal control officer and the officers were able to get each animal out of the truck successfully and supplied them with much needed water and tended to their minor wounds. None of the animals were gravely injured and all survived,” the press release said.
The animals were being transported from Pennsylvania to the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society, based in Lewiston. All of the animals were safely moved to the shelter by Thursday night.
