Southern School Notebook: The top 10% of Cape Elizabeth High seniors

CAPE ELIZABETH — At Cape Elizabeth High School, the following seniors finish the academic year ranked in the top 10 percent of the members of the Class of 2015, according to the school.

Sierra Bates, daughter of Amy and Matthew Bates, was an AP Scholar, the recipient of the Bates College Book Award and a member of the National Honor Society and the Maroon Medal Society. She served as class treasurer, president of the student council and student representative on the School Board. Bates was a varsity swimmer and a member of the Western Conference All-Academic swim team. She captained the ultimate frisbee team and the Maine All-Star team in the sport. She also was a member of the mock trial team. Outside of school, she has tutored elementary school students in reading, and volunteered at Special Olympics swim meets. She plans to attend the University of Miami.

Rhoen H. Fiutak, daughter of Rachael Sheskey and Jon Fiutak, received the Harvard Book Award, and was a member of the National Honor Society and the Maroon Medal Society. She has served as a student council representative, and participated in the Outing Club, Volunteer Club and Natural Helpers. Fiutak captained the cross country, Nordic skiing and lacrosse teams, and was named to the Western Maine Conference All-Academic teams for each sport. She plans to attend Wesleyan University.

Julia H. Ginder, daughter of Claire and Kenneth Ginder, received the Dartmouth College Book Award, and participated in the National Honor Society and the Maroon Medal Society. She captained the ice hockey team and was co-captain of the field hockey team, the outdoor track team and the science team. She received the Elaine Gordon Libby Award for dedication to the field hockey program, and was named to the Western Maine All-Conference teams in that sport and in ice hockey. She also was a winner of the Western Maine Conference Citizenship Award. Outside of school, Ginder has been active in the Girl Scouts and the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Conference. She plans to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Thomas K. Gleason, son of Maryellen Kennedy and Barry Gleason, received the Williams Book Award and the Hobey Baker Character Award, and was a member of the National Honor Society and the Maroon Medal Society. He participated in the World Affairs Council, the model United Nations team and the math team. Gleason played ice hockey and was named to the Western Maine Conference All-Academic team in the sport. He also received the John Wilber Memorial Scholarship. He plans to attend Georgetown University.

Charles W. Grimes, son of Blaine and Charles Grimes, was selected to receive the Brown University Book Award, and was a member of the National Honor Society. He was active on the mock trial and Science Bowl teams, participated in Natural Helpers and in robotics, and played as part of the jazz combo and wind symphony. Grimes also participated in the ultimate frisbee and Nordic skiing teams. He plans to attend Rice University.

Robert Harrison, son of Margo and Craig Harrison, served as class treasurer and was active in the World Affairs Council. He also played trombone in the concert jazz band, and was a member of the robotics team, math team, science team, debate team, mock trial team and model United Nations team. He plans to attend Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Lily Jordan, daughter of Nancy and Glenn Jordan, is the class valedictorian and a National Merit Scholarship recipient. She also received the Princeton University Book Award and the Maine Principals Association Award. She has participated in the debate team, math team, science team and chess club. Jordan has played both ice hockey and field hockey, being named to the Western Maine All-Conference team in ice hockey, and the conference All-Academic teams in both sports. She also has played on the softball team. She has been active in Girl Scouts, was a national medalist in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition, and was a winner in the Portland Stage Young Writers Project. She plans to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Emily Lynch, daughter of Laura and Christopher Lynch, received the St. Michael’s College Book Award, and was a member of the National Honor Society. She served on the student council as treasurer of the senior class, and captained the volleyball team. Lynch also played on the tennis team, was a member of the Volunteer Club and worked as a mentor at Pond Cove School. She plans to attend Davidson College.

Devin Maguire, not pictured, daughter of Gwyneth and Richard Maguire, received the Smith Book Award and was a member of the National Honor Society. She served as chairperson of the Freshlinks mentor program and was active in theater, the Cape Closet and the Volunteer Club. She also served as a mentor at Pond Cove School, studied singing, and participated in Girl Scouts. Maguire plans to attend Boston College.

Daniel S. Menz, son of Elizabeth O’Neill-Menz and John Menz, was the recipient of the Yale Book Award, and served on the student council as president of the senior class. He participated in the Peer-to-Peer Club, TEDx Youth, the model United Nations team, Natural Helpers and the concert jazz ensemble. He also was named to the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Conference. Menz captained the Nordic skiing team, was named the Western Maine Conference All-Academic team in the sport, and received the conference’s Citizenship Award. He also captained the ultimate frisbee team. Outside of school, he has taken part in the Chewonki Foundation Wilderness Leadership Expeditions. He plans to attend Harvard University.

Hannah Preble, daughter of Mary Casey and Jeff Preble, received the Wellesley Book Award, was named an AP Scholar and participated in the National Honor Society. She also participated in the jazz ensemble, symphonic band and wind symphony, played field hockey, and was a member of the math team, sailing team and swim team. She also has served as a mentor at Pond Cove School. In addition, Preble was named to the Maine Honors Music Festival, won a Silver Key in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition, and received the Girl Scouts’ 10-Year Honor Award. She plans to attend Wellesley College.

Benjamin Stanley, not pictured, son of Amy and Dana Stanley, received the Brown University Book Award, was a finalist in the National Merit Scholarship competition and participated in the National Honor Society. He served as co-chairperson of TEDx Youth, was active on the mock trial team and received a Gold Key in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition. Outside of school, Stanley has tutored and served as a campaign intern with the Democratic Party. He pans to attend Williams College.

Leo Wing, son of Debra Wing-Sproul and Anthony Kosner, was the recipient of the Wesleyan University Book Award, an AP Scholar, a finalist in the National Merit Scholarship competition and a Presidential Scholar candidate. He participated in the concert jazz ensemble, the Terry White Jazz Combo, the model United Nations team, the mock trial team and Upper Links. He received an honorable mention in Moody’s Mega Math Challenge, and a Judge’s Choice Award at the Berklee Jazz Festival. Wing was also a member of the swim team and track and field team. He plans to attend Northwestern University.

Claire Zimmerman, daughter of Jana and Jubal Zimmerman, was named the recipient of the Mt. Holyoke College Book Award and the Rotary Youth Leadership Award, and was a member of the National Honor Society. She served as co-president of Interact, and participated in the speech team, math team, a capella group, chorus and theater. She plans to attend Texas A & M University.
