NAPLES — Wells boys track coach Jason Hludik said he got an “all around” effort from his team at Saturday’s Western Maine Conference outdoor track and field championship meet. That effort, along with some winning finishes, led to a Division 2 team title for the Warriors at Lake Region High School.

“We talked about it. We had a good chance as long as everyone performed what they could do, and I think everyone did,” Hludik, the Warriors’ first-year coach, said of his team winning the title.

The Warriors won the title with both quantity and quality of finishes. Wells scored in 17 of 19 events, and had multiple scorers in seven events. They out-paced Division 2 runner-up Sacopee Valley 133 points to 129.

The 3,200 and 400-meter relay teams took first place in Division 2, and individually Keegan Reidy, Alec Pinette and Ben Wright won in the high jump, 200- and 800-meter runs, respectively.

Wright was the top overall finisher in the 800, with a winning time of 2:05.66.

“It felt pretty good. It was a pretty slow race today, though. The first lap I came through in 64 (seconds), and then I realized it was going to be pretty slow,” said Wright, who thought he had a good chance to win with the slow pace.

Wright jumped into the lead early, then lost it on the backstretch of the second lap to Greely’s Connor Rog, only to out-kick the competition in the final 100 meters.

“A little bit after the Greely guy passed me somebody bumped my right shoulder. I was just going to let him go and then somebody bumped my shoulder, and I was like ”˜they’re all probably right there.’ So then I kicked it in, I guess, and I ended obviously catching him and winning,” said Wright. “It was exhausting. It always is. It’s always exhausting and usually pretty exciting.”

Wells had three scorers each in the 200-meter dash and 3,200-meter run.

“We had some people jump in the two-mile at the end, we got some points in there,” said Hludik.

The Warriors added to their first-place finishes with runner-up placings in the 1,600-meter race walk (Nick Parrott), 300-meter hurdles (Hunter McDonnell), 1,600-meter relay, high jump (McDonnell) and triple jump (Reidy) and a third-place finish by Pinette in the 100-meter dash.

The 1,600 relay was the final event of the meet, and the Wells team of Alex Lumenello, Connor Littlefield, McDonnell and Wright finished third overall behind Yarmouth and Kennebunk, and three places ahead of Sacopee Valley in Division 2.

“We didn’t know the score, but we knew it was close, so that’s what we told them. Every point counts here at the end,” said Hludik of the final relay.

The Wells girls finished fourth in Division 2, with 78.5 points. The Warriors placed behind Traip Academy, Poland and Yarmouth.

Wells got a win in the 300 hurdles from Anna Libby, and runner-up finishes in the 400 (Reilly Boyle), 800 (Madison Szczygiel), and 3,200 and 1,600 relays. Warriors placed third in the high jump (Natalie Thurber), long jump (Bailey Morrison), javelin (Mikala Dunbar) and discus (Julia Nixon). Libby, Thurber and Isabella White all scored points in multiple individual events.

The Kennebunk boys took third place in Division 1, scoring 69 points to finish behind York and Falmouth.

The Rams won the 1,600 relay and Shane Normandeau won the shot put. Lucas Deely was runner-up in the 1,600 race walk, edging out teammate Lucas Marquis, who finished third. Jan Rutrle took third in the 400 and long jump, and Kyle Broughton finished third in the pole vault. Travon Bradford had fourth-place finishes in both the shot put and discus.

The Kennebunk girls scored 12 points to finish eighth in Division 1. Jackie Murphy was the runner-up in the 1,600 race walk, and the Rams took fifth in the 100-meter hurdles (Salma Lindbloom) and the 3,200 relay.

Old Orchard Beach was seventh for boys in Division 2, scoring 42 points. Erik Hogan was second in both the 100 and 200 and Andrew Graves was runner-up in the long jump. Zach Hirst was third in the triple jump, as was the Seagulls’ 3,200 relay team.

Mackenzie Rague was the runner-up in the long jump for the OOB girls team, and Megan Niedzwiecki finished fourth in the shot put for the Seagulls.

York was the top overall team for both divisions in the boys and girls standings. Traip won the Division 2 girls team title.

Ararat High School in Topsham, while the Class B meet is taking place at Morse High School in Bath and the Class C meet will be at Yarmouth High School.
