The month of June got off to a chilly start, but championship time has arrived for spring sports.

Tennis has handed out its singles championships and the team playoffs are underway. Outdoor track’s conference championship meet was last weekend, with states looming Saturday, Baseball, softball and lacrosse were all winding up at press time.

Here’s a glimpse:

Outdoor track

The Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference outdoor track championship meet was held last Saturday.

In Class A, Brunswick’s boys had 111.5 points to finish third behind Lewiston and Edward Little. Mt. Ararat (34) was seventh. The Dragons got wins from Keenan Welzel in the 400 (50.87 seconds) and their 4×100 relay team (45.09). The Eagles got a first-place showing from Andrew McCracken in the pole vault (13 feet).

Brunswick’s girls tallied 49 points and came in sixth (Lewiston was first). Mt. Ararat (28) placed 10th. The Dragons got wins from Tessa Cassidy in the mile (5 minutes, 29.4 seconds) and two-mile (11:47.5) and their 4×800 relay (10:24.7). 

In Class B, the Morse boys tallied 38 points and finished sixth (Belfast was first). The girls had 27 points and tied for eighth (Waterville finished first). 

The Class A state meet is Saturday in Topsham.

The Class B state meet is Saturday in Bath.

Tennis

Mt. Ararat’s Nick Mathieu got to the finals of the boys’ singles state tournament, but lost a close decision to Waynflete’s Isaac Salas, 6-7 (5), 3-6.

The team tournament is underway.

Brunswick’s boys earned the top seed in Eastern A after going 11-1. They hosted No. 8 Brewer in the quarterfinals Thursday.

Mt. Ararat also went 11-1 this spring and wound up seeded second. The Eagles hosted No. 7 Cony in the quarterfinals.

Morse’s boys earned the top seed in Western B after an 11-1 campaign and hosted No. 8 Spruce Mountain in the quarterfinals.

On the girls’ side, Brunswick wound up second in Eastern A after an 11-1 season and hosted No. 7 Skowhegan in the quarterfinals.

Mt. Ararat was seeded sixth after a 6-6 campaign and went to No. 3 Hampden Academy for the quarterfinals.

In Western B, Morse earned the No. 5 seed after a 7-5 season and went to No. 4 Gardiner for the quarterfinals.

The semifinals are scheduled for Saturday on the courts of the higher seeds, with the regional finals Tuesday at Colby College in Waterville. The state matches are Saturday, June 13, at Bates College in Lewiston.

Baseball

Morse’s baseball team was 7-8 and seventh in the Western B Heal Points standings (10 teams qualify for the playoffs) heading into its finale against Erskine. The Shipbuilders sandwiched home wins over Medomak Valley (4-0) and Camden Hills (2-1) around a 9-6 loss at Oceanside last week.

In Eastern A, Brunswick was eighth at 7-8 following a 6-1 win at Mt. Ararat and a 4-3 loss at Lewiston. The Dragons closed at home versus Oxford Hills.

Mt. Ararat finished 1-15 and 15th in Eastern A and will miss the playoffs. The Eagles closed with losses to visiting Brunswick (6-1), at Messalonskee (11-1) and at home to Skowhegan (7-2).

Softball

Mt. Ararat’s softball team appears playoff-bound. The Eagles won at home over Brunswick (13-0) and lost at Messalonskee (5-0) and at home to Skowhegan (4-3) last week to finish 6-10. Mt. Ararat looks like it will be the ninth and final team into the Eastern A playoffs and will likely play a preliminary round game at Lawrence Tuesday.

Brunswick was 1-14 and 12th entering its finale against visiting Oxford Hills. Last week, the Dragons lost at Mt. Ararat (13-0) and at Lewiston (7-5).

In Western B, Morse was battling for a playoff berth at press time. Last week, the Shipbuilders lost at home to Medomak Valley (9-5), fell at Oceanside (7-2) and won at home over Camden Hills (9-7) to improve to 8-7. Morse was 10th in the Heals at the start of the week and 10 teams qualify. The Shipbuilders closed against Erskine.

Boys’ lacrosse

Brunswick’s boys’ lacrosse team will be the top seed in Eastern A. Last week, the Dragons improved to 11-0 after downing visiting Messalonskee in a slugfest, 17-13. Brunswick closed at home against Morse.

Mt. Ararat was 4-7 and seventh in Eastern A after Friday’s 14-6 home loss to Messalonskee. The Eagles wrapped up their regular season at Gardiner.

In Eastern B, Morse was eighth at 6-5 after a 9-6 win at Oak Hill last week. The Shipbuilders closed with a game at Brunswick.

Girls’ lacrosse

On the girls’ side, Mt. Ararat appears as if it will be ranked second behind Messalonskee when the playoffs begin. Last week, the Eagles dominated visiting Cony, 13-1, to improve to 10-1. Mt. Ararat was home against Edward Little to close the regular season.

Brunswick took a 3-8 mark into its finale against defending Class B champion Yarmouth. The Dragons (who lost, 12-6, at Messalonskee Saturday) were seventh in Eastern A at press time. 

In Eastern B, Morse was third at 7-4 after an 11-10 loss at Lewiston and a 10-5 home win over Bonny Eagle. The Shipbuilders were home against Oceanside in their finale.
