A Massachusetts woman died after Maine State Police said her car was struck by another vehicle Sunday afternoon as she attempted to make a turn on Interstate 95 in Howland.

Trooper Thomas Fiske identified the victim as Elaine Butkus, 75, of Phillipston, Massachusetts. He said Butkus was operating a 2002 Toyota Camry when she tried to make a left turn from the southbound breakdown lane into the median crossover lane, which is reserved for police and emergency vehicles.

A 2012 Chevrolet Malibu driven by Jennifer Gervais, 41, of St. Agatha struck Butkus’ car as she tried to cross over two travel lanes to the median area. The speed limit along that stretch of highway is 75 mph.

Butkus was flown by LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where she died.

Gervais and two passengers were taken to Penobscot Valley Hospital in Lincoln with non-life threatening injuries.

Howland is located about 30 miles north of Bangor.
