SACO — Linwood “Babe” Kimball, 91, of Saco, passed away on Sunday, June 7, 2015, at St. Andre’s Health Care Facility in Biddeford.
He was born in Saco on Jan. 26, 1924, a son of Herbert and Eva (Lavallee) Kimball. He graduated from Thornton Academy, where he lettered in football. He was a huge fan and followed Trojan football his entire life.
Babe served his country in the United States Coast Guard during World War II.
He was deputy chief of the Old Orchard Beach Fire Department for several years.
Linwood was a corrections officer and mentor for the boys at the Boys Correctional Center/Youth Center in South Portland for many years. He was affiliated with Maine boxing and was instrumental in bringing boxing to the correctional center.
He was an avid fly fisherman and outdoorsman.
Babe also competed in many bench press competitions, holding state and national titles at the age of 70. He also had an annual bench meet named in his honor, called the “Babe Kimball” Bench Meet.
He was known amongst his friends as a strong individual but very humble.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Paul.
He is survived by: one daughter, Belinda Lin Smith and her husband Lorne of Windham; one son, Linwood Kimball and his wife Brenda LaBreck of Vermont; three stepdaughters, Cindy Whitney, Terry LeBrun and her husband Roland, and Pam Paquette and her husband Maurice; one stepson, Wayne McKee, and his wife Cheryl.
He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Renee, Bruce, James, Sherrie, Jessica, Shawn, Missy, Shane, Wayne, Eric, Kenny, and Dennis.
Visiting hours will be from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, June 10 at Cote Funeral Home, 87 James Street, Saco.
