A $29.5 million budget proposed for Regional School Unit 5 appeared to be headed for approval late Tuesday night, with two of the district’s three towns reporting results.

The results for Freeport and Pownal totaled 1,034-582. Durham’s results were unreported.

Freeport’s vote was 917-378 in favor of the budget. Pownal’s vote was 204-117 against.

The proposed budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1 represents a $2.1 million, 7.8 percent, increase.

As proposed, the budget was expected to increase Freeport’s annual property tax bills by $102 for every $100,000 of assessed value – $204 per year for a home assessed at $200,000.

It was expected to increase Durham tax bills by $145 per $100,000 valuation, or $290 a year for a home assessed at $200,000.

And Pownal property owners’ taxes would rise by $296 per $100,000 of valuation, $592 a year for a home assessed at $200,000.

Pownal voters elected Jonathan Morris to a selectman’s seat in a three-way race with Shawn Bennett and Timothy Grant; the vote totals were 166, 124 and 24, respectively.
