A small fire that broke out in the roof of an apartment building’s entryway forced Portland police to shut down Ocean Avenue for about 30 minutes Thursday afternoon.
Deputy Fire Chief John Everett said the building at 224 Ocean Ave. houses four apartment units. The fire appears to have been started by improper disposal of smoking materials.
The street was closed to traffic to allow firefighters to lay hoses across the road. The apartment building is in the vicinity of Cheverus High School.
Everett said the fire, which was reported at 3:44 p.m., was quickly brought under control. No injuries were reported.
