Portland police released a security camera picture of a person they say is a “person of interest” in the investigation into a recent rash of car burglaries in the West Bayside and Parkside area.

Close to three dozen car burglaries were reported between Monday night and Wednesday morning, and in each case windows were smashed to get into the cars, police said. Historically, most car burglars target unlocked cars, police said.

Police collected security video from businesses in the area of the car burglaries and say the picture they released was taken at 4:08 a.m. Tuesday, about the time they believe many of the burglaries happened. The image was taken on Somerset Street between Chestnut and Elm streets, police said.

Following the discovery of a half dozen cars broken into at Marginal Way parking lots, police released a description of a person seen in the area early that morning.

He was described as a white man, 5 feet 6 inches or 5 feet 7 inches tall, wearing a dark jacket, a single-strap shoulder bag and possibly a ball cap.

He was riding a 10-speed bicycle.

Police request that anyone who recognizes the individual or may have witnessed suspicious activity contact police at 874.8533.
