AUGUSTA — Sen. Susan Collins wants to put an end to the large number of unwanted phone calls that residents receive every day.
The Republican senator led a committee hearing this week that examined why people who have signed up on the “Do Not Call Registry” still receive so many unwanted phone calls. Collins is chairwoman of the Senate Special Committee on Aging.
Collins says that advances in technology have allowed scammers to get around the Do Not Call list. Scammers can disguise their caller ID and even make it look like the call is coming from the IRS or local law enforcement.
Collins is backing a measure that would give the Federal Communication Commission more power to crack down on unwanted calls and impose more penalties on scammers.
