Who says history doesn’t repeat?

Saturday, for the eighth year in a row, the finest Class C boys’ tennis team in the state was the Waynflete Flyers.

The Flyers, who had a tremendous 11-1 regular season, marred only by a 4-1 loss at now-three time Class B champion Cape Elizabeth in the opener way back on April 28, earned the No. 2 seed for the Western C tournament and made quick work of every team in their path.

After downing No. 7 Madison (5-0) in the quarterfinals and third-ranked Boothbay (5-0) in the semifinals, Waynflete had to go up against the top-seed, Hall-Dale, last Wednesday in the regional final, where it prevailed again by a 5-0 score.

Isaac Salas, the state’s single champion, won his first singles match in straight sets, as did No. 2 Brandon Ameglio and third singles Clancy Mitchell. The first doubles team of Peter Michalakes and Stephen Epstein and Jake Soley and Jacob Greene at second doubles also won in straight sets as the Flyers moved on to the state match against George Stevens Academy for the sixth straight season.

And once again, Waynflete took care of business, winning the match, 4-1. Salas capped his season in style with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Tate Yoder at No. 1 singles. Ameglio was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Nate Boechat at second singles. Mitchell didn’t drop a game at third singles, handling Luke Theoharidis, 6-0, 6-0. Soley and Greene also won their match at second doubles, 6-1, 6-1, over Ben Politte and David Reinke. Only Michalakes and Epstein dropped a point at first doubles, as they lost to Tim Dentino and Matt Stephens, 6-0, 5-7, 6-10, with the match already decided.

“This team exceeded my expectations by defeating both Cape and Falmouth (during the regular season),” said Flyers coach Jeff Madore. “My hope was for us to give them a good match and I knew we had a chance. I just figured if we got one of those matches it would be great, but I never figured we would win both.”

The Flyers finished the season 15-1 and while they might come back to the pack in 2016, don’t bet on it.

“Having six seniors on the team provided match experience that other teams may have lacked,” Madore said. “Now, we’ll be in that situation next year with only five returning players, only three of whom were starters this season.”

Waynflete’s girls’ squad was hoping to make it dual titles for the school for the fifth straight season, but the Flyers were ousted by eventual champion North Yarmouth Academy in the regional final, 4-1.

After a 5-7 regular season, No. 7 Waynflete beat No. 2 Winthrop (4-1) and third-ranked St. Dom’s 3-2, but against the Panthers, the Flyers’ lone point came from Molly McNutt and Sidara Cash-Sortwell at second doubles. The tandem beat NYA’s Livy Stam and Hannah Hungerford, 7-6 (6), retired. Lexi Epstein lost at first singles to Lena Rich, 0-6, 3-6. Annika Morrill was beaten at second singles by Mina Stam, 1-6, 5-7. At third singles, Liv Troiano lost to Mary Morrison, 0-6, 0-6. First doubles tandem Randall Seder and Kiera MacWhinnie lost, 0-6, 2-6, to Hannah Chapman and Corinne Poitras.

Waynflete’s season ended at 7-8.
