The issue of General Assistance for noncitizens has gotten out of hand. It is time for the state Legislature to enact clear and concise legislation on the matter of GA funds: Only legal American citizens who are residents of the state of Maine shall be eligible for General Assistance and all taxpayer-funded state aid.

I am sorry about the plight of these noncitizens who have found their way to Maine’s shores. But we are a poor state that can barely take care of our own destitute citizens; Maine cannot take responsibility for the world’s poverty and economic problems.
