LANCASTER, N.H. – New Hampshire’s Fish and Game Department says a Boy Scout leader leading a troop from Maryland on a hike in the White Mountains has died of an apparent heart attack.
Lt. Wayne Saunders of the department says 51-year-old Vernon Rippeon of Westminster, Maryland, was one of four adults leading the troop on a hike through the Presidentials mountain range on Sunday.
Saunders said officers received a call regarding a medical emergency 1 1/2 miles up the Crawford Path trail Sunday morning. CPR was started almost immediately, but efforts to revive Rippeon were not successful.
Saunders said the group was planning on staying at Appalachian Mountain Club huts over a five-day period. He said Rippeon’s own two boys were among the scouts on the trip.
