New Hires, Promotions and Appointments

The Maine Cancer Foundation, headquartered in Falmouth, recently hired Aysha Sheikh as program officer. Previously, she worked for MaineHealth, managing a federally funded initiative to reduce colorectal cancer. She also has been a Peace Corps volunteer in Ethiopia. A registered nurse, Sheikh holds degrees from Mount Holyoke College, Boston University School of Public Health and the University of Southern Maine.

The Cape Elizabeth office of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage has hired Marcia Jansen as a broker. She brings over 30 years of New England real estate experience to her new position. Jansen also held faculty positions at Smith College and Springfield College, and served as dean of students at Northfield Mount Hermon School. She resides in Cape Elizabeth.

Maine Medical Partners, a physician group affiliated with Maine Medical Center in Portland, recently hired two physicians. Dr. Anthony Karabanow will practice in the group’s hospital medicine practice. Formerly with Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque, New Mexico, he is board-certified in internal medicine. Karabanow completed his residency at University of Wisconsin Hospital/Clinics and received his medical degree from University of Connecticut. Dr. Amina Qazi has joined the Scarborough office of MMP’s cardiology practice. She received her medical degree from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. Qazi completed internship and residency at the University of Connecticut and received fellowship training in cardiovascular disease at MMC.

The Cancer Community Center, of South Portland, has named Nicole Avery as executive director. Avery has served with the center for six years as a trustee, president of the board of trustees and volunteer support group facilitator. She has over 20 years of nonprofit work experience, including managing fundraising for the United Way of Greater Portland and serving as vice president of development for the United Way of Central Maryland.

Norton Financial Services, an employee benefits and investment management firm based in Cumberland, recently hired Jerry McQueeney as group benefits account executive. McQueeney’s 22-year career includes serving as director of employee benefits at Cross Insurance in Portland, and founding his own employee benefits agency. He also was a national sales manager at the PMA Cos. and a group representative at Sun Life Financial. A resident of South Portland, he earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Maine.

Recognition

Steve Levesque, executive director of the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority, has been named recipient of the Association of Defense Communities’ 2015 Community Leadership Award. The award recognizes officials and military communities throughout the country demonstrating leadership, innovation and excellence. Levesque was scheduled to receive the award June 24 at a breakfast with members of Congress in Washington, D.C.

Creative Portland, a nonprofit group that works to cultivate the area’s creative industries and serves as the city’s local arts agency, recently received a Creative Economy Award from the New England Foundation for the Arts. The $2,500 awards, honoring one organization and one project every two years, recognize successful, replicable strategies for fostering commerce based on the arts, culture and creative businesses. The awards were presented at a June 3 conference in Keene, New Hampshire.

New Beginnings

Harpswell Coastal Academy, a public charter school serving grades six to 12, plans to lease space at Brunswick Landing this fall for high-school classes teaching up to 80 students. Matt Hamilton, currently a school counselor who has served for 12 years at Bath Middle School, will become the building leader for HCA’s new branch, on the site of the former Brunswick Naval Air Station. HCA expects about 120 middle-school students to attend class at its current location in West Harpswell.

Mid Coast Medical Group, a medical practice affiliated with Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick, recently opened an office building at 108 Centre St. in downtown Bath. The new clinic, valued at $6 million, was dedicated in a June 9 ceremony hosted by the Southern Midcoast Maine Chamber of Commerce.
