The Taste of the Nation, a major fundraiser for childhood hunger due to open at 5 p.m. at Fort Williams Park, has been canceled due to drenching rain and heavy winds.

Event organizers said the wind, with gusts up to 35 mph, has created unsafe conditions in the tent at ocean-front park.

“We are incredibly disappointed to cancel given the months of hard work and planning by our volunteers, chefs, sponsors and supporters,” organizers posted on the event’s website.

Organizers said there are no plans to reschedule. They will host an on-line auction featuring all of the silent and live auction items that were donated for the event.

Organizers said they would have the auction as soon as possible and keep it open for a week.

The event raises close to $200,000 to fight childhood hunger and features dozens of chefs.
