Firefighters were called to a house fire at 69 Middle Road in Boothbay Harbor early Tuesday morning.

The fire was reported in an unoccupied single-family home at 3:45 a.m. When firefighters arrived, the house was already burning intensely, said Fire Chief Nicholas Upham. Surrounding towns helped battle the fire. The mutual aid companies returned to their towns at about 7:30 a.m. and the Boothbay Harbor Fire Department cleared the scene at 10 a.m., he said.

The house, a 1½-story Cape, was for sale but Upham said he did not know whether it was being sold by the previous resident or if it was a bank foreclosure sale.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
