Re: “Our View: Portland City Council should approve $10.10 minimum wage” (July 4):

“No one working full time should be stuck in poverty” was an argument used in the July 4 editorial. Progressives see only one solutions to that problem – take away a fundamental freedom, the freedom of choice.

We should all be free to work for a business based on our personal criteria, including the wage they pay.

What right do any of these progressives have to tell someone who would agree to work for another individual for a mutually agreed-upon wage that they can’t? How do they have the right to say to someone they must work for a wage they set as “fair” or not work? The arrogance and disdain for the average working man are shameful.

The Declaration of Independence says that the purpose of govenrment is “That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men.”

The rights that governments are to secure are the rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

These rights come from our creator – not government, not the majority, not mankind at all. I will continue to pray that Americans will learn to appreciate the founding documents that made this the most blessed nation in the history of the world.
