TURNBULL, Conn. — Izaiya Mestre allowed just two singles over five innings, and reliever Jake Flynn gave up just one more single over the final two innings, as Western Massachusetts beat Maine champion Augusta 9-0 during opening-day pool play of the Babe Ruth 13-15 New England regional tournament in Turnbull, Connecticut.
Augusta continues pool play with a 10:30 a.m. Saturday game against Vermont.
BABE RUTH 14: Ben Sawyer had three hits and scored four runs while leading Portland in the regional tournament to a 14-1 victory over Vermont during opening day play in Westfield, Massachusetts.
Portland built an 8-1 lead over the first five innings before invoking the 10-run mercy rule with six runs in the top of the sixth.
Portland plays Eastern Massachusetts 7 p.m. Saturday.
TWILIGHT: Jake Glauser scored on an error during the bottom of the sixth to give Lenders Network (15-3) a 5-4 victory over Aero (10-8) in a game stopped after six innings.
