Westbrook Little League won the 2015 12-year-old District Six Championship at Warren field in Westbrook on Wednesday evening defeating South Portland American 2-1.

This is the first 12-year-old District Championship win for Westbrook since reaching the Little League World Series in 2005. Team members include Colby Haynes, Nick Hutton, Ryan Joyce, Lucas Knapton, Jake Thornton, Brayden Demers, Caden Dow, Matt Eugley, Dominic Terrano, Brady Desjardins, Matt Weymouth and Kyle McKone.

Wednesday’s game was continued from Tuesday night when a power outage turned off the lights with the score tied at one apiece in the bottom of the fifth.

Colby Haynes was the most recent hero for Westbrook as he pitched two scoreless innings and hit the game-winning home run in the sixth for the boys in blue. Westbrook’s Matt Eugley and SPA’s Gus Lappin hooked up in a classic pitching duel at 1-1 when Tuesday’s game was stopped due to the power outage.

The road to the championship was not easy for Westbrook as they battled back from the losers bracket after losing to South Portland American 7-5. Westbrook went on to win three games on three consecutive nights. They defeated defending champs Scarborough 10-9, SPA 16-15 in a slugfest and the pitching duel in the final. Most impressive for the cardiac kids from Westbrook is that they won all three games by one run and won all three games in the last inning.

The prize for winning the District is a trip to the State tournament in Waldoboro beginning Saturday, July 25. Opening Day ceremonies are 2 p.m. Saturday followed by Westbrook’s first game against District 4 champs Biddeford at 3 p.m. Westbrook is also scheduled to play on Sunday, July 26, against the District 2 champions at 3 p.m. The format is pool play with the four top teams moving on to the semifinals on Tuesday, the 28th with the winners advancing to the finals on Thursday the 30th.

A team from Westbrook Little League won the District 6 championship last week and will compete in the state championship in late July. Team members include Colby Haynes, Nick Hutton, Ryan Joyce, Lucas Knapton, Jake Thornton, Brayden Demers, Caden Dow, Matt Eugley, Dominic Terrano, Brady Desjardins, Matt Weymouth and Kyle McKone.Courtesy photo
