Nature’s Variety announced a national recall Tuesday of one of its raw dog food products because of a possible salmonella risk, officials said.

The Missouri-based company recalled Instinct Raw Chicken Formula with a “Best By” date of 04/27/16. Nature’s Variety dog food is sold extensively throughout Maine, according to the company website.

Planet Dog employees in Portland said they were calling customers who had bought the dog food to notify them of the recall.

“The raw food movement has really gained a lot of traction,” said salesman Patrick Young, adding that the Nature’s Variety product is popular. “Raw food is a great thing to do, but there’s always a risk.”

Nature’s Variety officials said no illnesses associated with the dog food have been reported, and customers can get a full refund. The FDA notified the company of the contamination after a routine test.
