WHITEFIELD (AP) — A Maine woman holding an essay contest to give away 47 acres of woodlands she owns has abandoned the effort because she did not get enough entries.

Martha Manchester, of Edgecomb, who has owned the land in Whitefield since 1994, tells the Kennebec Journal she will refund the $100 entry fees.

The contest rules required entrants to pay $100 and submit an essay of no more than 200 words saying what they wanted to do with the land, assessed for more than $57,000.
