FALMOUTH — Adelaide “Addie” Lucy Burke, 93, died July 25 at Falmouth by the Sea, where she had resided for almost two years.

She was born July 2, 1922, the daughter of Antonio and Mary Colucci Dimatteo, in Portland. She graduated from Portland High School in 1941, and began working at Portland’s W.T. Grant department store. There, she met her future husband.

Adelaide devoted her life to her husband and her family. In her free time, she also enjoyed traveling, especially on cruises and to destinations such as New Orleans and the Caribbean. In addition, she loved to cook and bake, and was still creating delicious dishes up until four years ago, when her health grew worse. She passed on her secrets for Italian cookie baking to her oldest granddaughter, Amy. Burke was also a creative seamstress, and enjoyed knitting and crocheting.

After retirement, she enjoyed wintering in Florida, first in West Palm Beach for 20 years and then Dunedin for 10 years. She made many friends along the way.

She was predeceased by her husband of 70 years, John “Jack” Burke; her youngest son, Anthony P. Burke; her great-grandsons, Austin Kalicky and Aaron Kalicky; her parents; and her sister, Anna DiMatteo Donatello.

Burke is survived by her son, John M Burke Sr., and his wife, Janice Dorazio Burke; her daughter, Marianne Burke Latini, and her husband, Peter; and two sisters, Susanne DiMatteo Fasulo and Phyllis DiMatteo Mazziotti. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Amy Burke Kalicky, John M Burke Jr. and his wife, Diana, Andrea Burke, Matthew Burke and his wife, Bobbi, Kali Burke, Ian Burke, Jasper Rice and his wife, Genevieve, Phillip Latini, Anthony Latini and Marianne Latini Doucette. In addition, survivors include her great-grandchildren, Sadie Kalicky, Sage Kalicky, Gabrielle Burke, Isabelle Burke, Lucia Burke, Michaela Venezio and Arianna Burke.

The family wishes to extend thanks to the staff at Falmouth by the Sea for their care and kindness over the past 21 months.

Visitation was held July 30 at Jones-Rich-Hutchins Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated July 31 at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, in Portland.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made in Burke’s name to Beacon Hospice, 54 Atlantic Place, South Portland, ME 04106.
