A York County man died on Friday after crashing an all-terrain vehicle and being thrown from the vehicle while traveling on Route 117 in Limington.

Austin Pennell, 48, of Limington was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash around 10 a.m. on the section of roadway between Moody and Cape roads and no other vehicles were involved, according to York County Sheriff William King Jr.

“While the investigation is still underway, it appears that Mr. Pennell was traveling south on Cape Road between Elijah Lane and Boothby Road when he struck a rock along the embankment. The impact likely caused him to lose control of the ATV and he was thrown from the vehicle,” King said in a written statement.

Investigators determined that neither speed nor alcohol were factors in the crash, he said.

Emergency workers from the Limington Fire and Rescue transported Pennell to the Maine Medical Center in Portland, where he was pronounced dead later Friday evening. The exact cause of his death had not been determined by Saturday afternoon, King said.
