A Friday evening fire destroyed a home just across the road from the fire station in Palermo, and its cause is under investigation.

It took firefighters nearly six hours to fight the fire, reported at 5:46 p.m., which burned a single-family house at 24 North Palermo Road.

Nobody was home or injured during the blaze, but the house was declared “a total loss,” Palermo Fire Chief Michael York said.

York said when firefighters arrived at the home, it was on fire and the blaze proved hard to fight, in part because of the home’s metal roof. Departments from China, Montville and Liberty also responded, and crews were at the scene until about 11:30 p.m.

The home is owned by Kurt and Dawn Fowler, according to town tax records. York said their insurance company was at the home and is helping the family relocate. The house stood near the Town Office and the fire station, just off of Branch Mills Road and Route 3.

York said the Office of the State Fire Marshal is still investigating the fire’s cause and he didn’t know what started it.
