An 84-year-old man who was injured in a four-vehicle crash Thursday in Woolwich died Friday afternoon, said the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office.

Paul Simpson of Bradenton, Florida, died at Maine Medical Center in Portland from the injuries he suffered in the crash at Route 1 and Shaw Road. Two other people were injured in the crash.

The sheriff’s office said its preliminary investigation showed that drivers involved were not paying attention and were following each other too closely.

It said Thomas Palmer, 45, of Montpelier, Vermont, was driving north on Route 1 when he rear-ended a 2010 Toyota sedan driven by Albert Pinkham, 39, of Wiscasset. Police said Pinkham was stopped in traffic, waiting to make a left turn onto Shaw Road.

Palmer’s 2011 Chevrolet pickup truck shoved Pinkham’s car into the southbound lane, where it collided with a 2015 Honda van driven by Gloria Simpson, 70, of Bradenton, Florida. Paul Simpson was a passenger in the van.

The Simpsons were taken to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick. Paul Simpson was later transferred to Maine Medical Center.

Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in the crash, and all of the occupants were wearing seat belts.
