A spokesman for the family of accused murderer Connor S. MacCalister said the family still plans to raise funds to help the family of murder victim Wendy Boudreau with her funeral expenses, but it won’t be done through an online fundraising website as was originally planned.

Wallace Clark, MacCalister’s cousin, said Wednesday evening that he initially wanted to set up a fund on GoFundMe – a personal online fundraising website – but changed his mind after learning that the website gets a share of any proceeds that are raised.

“We want 100 percent of the funds we raise to go to the Boudreau family, if they are willing to receive it,” said Clark, who lives in Massachusetts. “We don’t want anyone to make money off this tragedy.”

Clark said he is still not sure what form the Boudreau fund might take. An attorney is assisting Clark and his family with setting up the fund.

“We are not trying to make amends because this was a heinous and sickening crime. Our hearts are broken for Wendy and her family,” he said.

MacCalister, 31, of Saco was arrested Aug. 19 after Boudreau, 59, was stabbed in the neck in the ice cream aisle of a Shaw’s in Saco. Police said the assault was random. MacCalister, who is facing murder charges, is being held without bail at the York County Jail in Alfred.

About 400 people attended a prayer vigil for Boudreau on Sunday evening and more than 600 people filled Thornton Academy on Tuesday for her funeral service. She was celebrated as a vivacious and caring mother and grandmother who lived joyfully.
